Worst Starts to June

Today's 1.72% decline for the S&P 500 is the second worst start to June over the last 50 years.  Only the first trading day of June 2002 was worse with a decline of 2.48%.  Below we highlight all first days of June that have been down over the last 50 years.  We also provide the index's performance through the end of the month.  For Junes that have started the month down, the S&P has averaged a rest-of-month decline of 0.53%.  For Junes that have started the month up, the index has still averaged a decline for the rest of the month (-0.36%), but just not as big of one.

Thank you ... like many quantitative historical studies, this doesn't have much predictive value out of context with the current market, especially when you throw in the wild 'news' environment. Good to see the averages though ....

It might be interesting to see the last week of June results depending on the first half of June performance .... you could probably say the same about any month though.
